Nikon d850

Last week I had the chance to test out the new Nikon d850. There are plenty of detailed reviews out there, so let me just concentrate on couple of features that are important for me as a wedding photographer.

Resolution:

The most important info I needed to know, is whether the medium RAW files have the same quality (dynamic range, high ISO, ...) as the full RAW files. 45 MPx are great for landscape or studio photography, but for wedding photography it is simply too much. I photographed following picture significantly underexposed to see how much detail I can recover in the shadows, and I am happy to say that there is not much of a difference for a bare eye. I took a picture of the same landscape once in full and medium RAW. In Lightroom I increased the shadows to maximum and highlights to minimum. Then I exported both images with a long edge of 6000 px and standard sharpening for screen. If I zoom in to 100% of the JPEGs, full RAW seems tiny bit sharper, but that is more result of downscaling from a bigger file. To sum up, yes I think the mRAW files can be used for wedding photography.

Silent live view mode / great but with 1 limitation

Great feature when shooting in the church, concerts, presentations or street photography. There are to Modes:

SL1 – you get full RAW files. Once you focus you can get up to 6 frames per second. I love the possibility to just tap on the touch display and the camera focuses and makes the photo. I like to photograph from very high or low angles, but before I always lost time moving the focusing cursor, now you just tap and it’s done. One limitation though, if you are shooting under neon lamp, you cannot use time shorter than 1/100 or 1/80 of a second, otherwise you get visible banding on the picture. The reason is that in the silent live view the data are read out directly from the sensor, without closing the shutter.  As a result I can photograph non moving objects, but can forget about it when shooting first kiss or rings exchange.

SL2 – you can get up to 15 to 30 frames per second, but the images are JPEGs with an image size of 3600x2400 px. Also the crop factor changes from FX to I guess DX. For me personally not an option I would use in real life.

Colours

This is super subjective, but for me super important. I started with Nikon d700 and I adored the colours on this camera, later I got d800 which in my opinion had a yellow/green tint. Nikon d750 is very good, I just feel that the transitions between highlights and shadows are a bit abrupt. Finally d850 is really beautiful. Coupled with a Nikon 35 1.4 the images are nice contrasty even when shooting against the sun. The transitions are smooth. Really happy about the colours here.

Focus peaking – hmmm...

Focus peaking shows red or blue colour on the edges which are in focus and helps improve manual focusing. It is available only in manual focusing mode and only visible in live view. No focus peaking in the viewfinder. You can also use it while shooting video, but have to turn off digital stabilization and it only works with 1080, not with 4K??? Sometimes I shoot portraits at F1.8 and thought it could help me to put my focus spot on. So here is my experience, if you focus on significant edges like furniture or glasses you can see it well, however if you try to focus on bare eye, it only highlighted the catch lights in the eyes, which are usually small and I saw only a small red pin in the eye, if at all. Probably I was doing something wrong, but for the moment, not a feature I would see using in real life.

Focus

Fast and snappy as used from other Nikon models. Compared to Nikon d750 it has 55 instead of 51 focusing points, which are spread less centrally, which enables better composition options. Nikon advertises 153 focus points, but the remaining 98 are so called sub or supporting focus points which assist the main 55. As Nikon d750 has had very good focus system already, I couldn't notice any strong improvement on the Nikon d850. If you are interested in more details about the Nikon focusing system, here is a great explanatory article on this.

To sum up Nikon brought up again and extraordinary piece of gear. The reasons for an upgrade from my Nikon d750 are:

1.     Option to change the RAW size, depending on the need

2.     Excellent colours and image quality.

3.     Tap focus/shutter

4.     Silent Live view mode 1

5.     Higher buffer

6.     Overall slightly faster handling

“Was making a business photo session together with Lukas at his cosy studio. He appeared to be very professional photographer and a very nice person. I've liked very much the results which I've seen right after the session and quite sure that after post production they will become even better. I'll definitely will return to him with any other photo related projects which I might have in future. Highly recommended!” - Patrick Wang, USA -

Gloria & Marcel | Galopprennbahn Freudenau Prater

Marcel and Gloria are two ultra sympathetic teachers from Vienna. Gloria, as you could have already seen loves horse riding and Marcel is a professional dancer.

They chose a rather atypical but cool wedding venue Galopprennbahn Freudenau, which has a long tradition of horse racing starting already in the 19th century. Hidden in the forests of Wiener Prater, the place discloses atmosphere of the monarchy times. The whole place has a beautiful patina. I am always amazed to find out these fantastic hidden spots here in Vienna. The ceremony took place in the closeby Chapel. Even the kids from school came to congratulate their favorite teachers :-)

It was a very pleasant wedding with great and funny guests. I am very happy that I could be part of it. Thank you and wish the couple all the best.

PS: Do not miss the fireshow at the end of the post!

Verena & Nikolai | Prater

Verena and Nikolai are just fun, so I couldn't think of any other better location than Wiener Prater at night. I really love when couples are ready to experiment with me. This time we did a night shoot, including light painting and turning rounds on Ringelspiel. We planned to do some other attractions, but our stomachs did not share the same opinion:-)

Well this is what came out. Fasten up your seatbelts and enjoy the ride :-)

Marina & Kevin | Schloss Pichlarn

I always love to return to the beautiful Styria. Weather is cool and the people are warm.  Marina & Kevin firstly met on the golf pitch in Schloss Pichlarn and decided to marry here as well. Golf is simply the game of their love  :-)

It is amazing to see how much love and adoration the two of them felt for each other.

It was a beautiful wedding, with an amazing couple in a dreamy location. I wish the couple many happy years together and thank you for your warm welcome.

Location: Schloss Pichlarn, Band: Sondercombo, Videographer: Visio Studio

WOW...die Bilder sind einfach traumhaft, du hast die Stimmung und unsere Emotionen sagenhaft festgehalten!! Das sind wundervolle Erinnerungen für uns für die Ewigkeit.

Babies

You probably know Alexandra and Christian from my blog post about their wedding.  Not even one year later, the fruit of their love - Noah is here with us. He is at least as photogenic as his parents. Don't you think?

The smell of baby powder and diapers reminded me that pretty soon we will also welcome our new "add-on" to our family :)

Alya ❤︎ Dani | Fuerteventura

We met Alya and Dani on the beautiful island of Fuertenventura. They both are passionate surfers and longboard riders. They live for the moment and enjoy every second together. I was happy to cross their lives and bring you this sunny pictures :-)

Also big thanks to my little assistant Oliver, I think we are a good team :-)
